Bishop John Barres will kick off the 2016 Bishop’s Annual Appeal at events and gatherings throughout the Diocese of Allentown in April.

With help from volunteer leaders in Berks, Carbon, Lehigh, Northampton and Schuylkill counties, Bishop Barres heads an effort focused on raising $5 million this year.

Those funds, overseen by a group of volunteer advisors from across the diocese, make it possible for Catholic Charities, Catholic schools, parishes and ministries to serve tens of thousands of local children, adults and families throughout the diocesan community.

“The Bishop’s Annual Appeal is a beautiful expression of the church’s mission of Christ’s mercy,” said Bishop Barres. “Through the Bishop’s Annual Appeal we reach out family to family, in charity, to the real life needs, traumas, crosses and sufferings in our midst.”

The theme of the 2016 Bishop’s Annual Appeal, “Open the Door of Mercy,” coincides with the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy announced by Pope Francis for this year.

“Through the Bishop’s Annual Appeal,” said Bishop Barres, “we answer Pope Francis’ special call during this Jubilee Year to go out to every man and woman, bringing the goodness and tenderness of God.”

In the coming weeks, local parishes will share additional information about the 2016 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. More information is also available at www.faithhopecharitygives.org
